Arne Jacobsen > EGG CHAIR

Arne Jacobsen was one of Denmark's most influential 20th century architects and both his buildings and furniture combine modernist ideals with a Nordic love of naturalism. Jacobsen's dedication to the successful combination of form and function is apparent in all his designs.

The highly sculptured 'Egg Chair' was originally designed in 1957 for the Royal SAS Hotel in Copenhagen.

The Egg Chair is the result of Jacobsen's search for a curved fluid form which required minimum padding and was lightweight without losing the comfort.

The history of the egg and swan chairs

In 1955, SAS airlines decided to build a hotel to celebrate the Jet Age. Arne Jacobsen was appointed as the architect and came up with a novel solution for the triangular building plot. He came up with two buildings: one lying down, the other balancing eighteen stories upwards. To complement this hotel, Jacobsen designed every part of every room, including all the soft furnishings. It was at this point, in 1957, that he came up with the designs for the egg and swan chairs.

Today, only one room survives, still decorated exactly as per the 1957 specification and this room is still available to be booked.
